- BBGeekcast: July 30, 2010 – Episode 127 It looks like AT&T is getting greedy with new devices. We know they have the 9800 coming — and could be coming very soon — but now we’ve caught a glimpse of a new device. It’s GSM, so AT&T could be picking up that one, too. When will Ma Bell stop? So click on over here to hear the BBGeekcast (9 min, 48 sec) And don’t forget to subscribe to the podcast so you won’t miss future episodes! You can also subscribe to the BBGeekcast in iTunes. Highlights include: On Tuesday, August 3, RIM and AT&T will hold an event in NYC. No one thought twice about what it might be about. The 9800 is coming, and it’s coming on AT&T, so it doesn’t take an insider to put two and two together. We’ll be there to get all the details first hand, so stay tuned on Tuesday. That won’t be the only OS 6 device in AT&T’s near future. See, the 9700 has only 256MB of RAM, so no OS 6 for it. We have heard rumblings of a refresh that would add the necessary RAM, and this week we saw it in full force from multiple sources. It doesn’t look too far away. There’s not much to get excited about, really. Other than OS 6, I guess. The Black Pad? C’mon RIM. You can do better than that. This post originated at BBGeeks.com - home to all things Blackberry! - Screenshot apps for your BlackBerry If you’re not on Twitter, you’re missing out. We’ve got a fairly prolific account there, @BBGeeks, where we discuss all things BlackBerry with tons of folks every day. Lately we had a little back and forth with a number of readers about screenshot apps. There are plenty of them and everyone has their preference. We have a number of them available in the Store, which we’ll go over here. Best of all, most of them are on sale. Let us know which is your favorite in the comments. SnapScreen: Listed first because it’s the one I use. I have no particular connection to this app, but it’s the first one I tried and have had almost no problems with it. Sometimes it will close a menu before taking the screenshot, but with a few tries I can usually get it. Get SnapScreen for $3.99. Quick Shot: It’s only $1.25, it’s available all the way back to OS 4.3, and it works pretty well. Even supports multiple screenshots. Get Quick Shot. Screenshot: Basic name, basic app. It takes shots in a number of different formats, and can queue them so you can send a batch via email. It also provides a notification when the screen shot gets taken. Get Screenshot for $2.49. There’s also a free version, but that obviously lacks some of the more in-depth functions. Screen Muncher: This is more of a for-fun thing, allowing you to capture screens complete with munch-marks. It does create a watermark, so you won’t go posting them on your blog, but it’s fine for sharing with friends. And yeah, it’s free, so there’s no real downside. Get Screen Muncher. Alisha Screenshot: This is a new one, and it looks pretty basic. In fact, it looks a lot like SnapScreen. At least it’s cheap. Get Alisha Screenshot for $1.99. - BlackBerry News From The Wire for the Week of 7... Not only did we get a glimpse of a new device this week, but we saw it in many different forms. You know it’s not a major device when we get initial pictures, video, and more sets of pictures in the same week. Still, it’s something up RIM’s sleeve. We have that, plus what should amount to some big news about the 9800. RIM working on the Bold 9780 w/ OS 6 That’s the first image we saw of the BlackBerry Bold 9780, courtesy of Salomondrin, who has been on a roll lately. We heard about this device a few months ago, and as expected it looks like a Bold 9700 refresh. The reason? The Bold 9700 has just 256MB of RAM, meaning it can’t run OS 6. As you can see from the home screen in this picture, the 9780 runs OS 6. Later in the week Driphter came in with more pics. But it wasn’t until later in the week that they hit us with some additional excellence. They found some nice, full-body shots of the 9780, plus a video. We haven’t heard when the Bold 9780 will drop, but I can’t imagine it’s too far behind the 9800. Tip of the week: Speed up your BlackBerry browser. Because no one wants to deal with the load bar crawling along. Signs point to 9800 announcement on August 3 When you get one of these in your email, you tend to get quite excited. AT&T and RIM? Can it be anything other than the 9800? Sure, I guess it could be. But considering all the hype we’ve consumed over the last couple of months, and with the hints RIM itself has already dropped, it seems like a fair enough bet. We’ll be there, city rats that we are, and will try to get information out as it is announced. Given the number of places I’ve seen this invitation posted, I imagine it will be quite a crowded scene. Want another sign that the 9800 is close? As BBLeaks reports, developers have been given the green light to submit their 9800 apps for App World. We’ve heard that there are plenty of 9800 demo units floating around to developers, so this makes plenty of sense. The OS 6 home screen There is plenty new going on in OS 6, but thankfully we have people on the inside bringing us that information. At Inside BlackBerry, Douglas Soltys talks to director of UX research Joey Benedek, who discusses, at length, the OS 6 home screen. It’s definitely worth the read — it reveals so much. To me, the best part comes at the end when Benedek mentions that the Notification Dropdown is his favorite aspect of the new home screen. I love the notification dropdown on my Nexus One. It’s one of the best features of the Android platform. I’m going to love having that on my BlackBerry, too. And if you’re a 9650 fan, you can check out some screenshots of OS 6 on a non-touch device. Roundup Check out our review of Calendar Pro. It’s a performance enhancer for your native calendar and tasks apps. We’re giving away 15 licenses, so make sure to leave a comment there. Is RIM working on a landscape slider? Maybe. BBLeaks has the patent information, though this is not the first time we’ve seen file a patent for a landscape slider. BlackBerry a threat to national security? I guess it depends on what country we’re talking about. Virtual Vault stores your BIS email. Good for backingup emails without taking up device memory. Apparently RIM bought BlackPad.com. This has everyone thinking that’s the upcoming tablet’s name. Maybe it is. But I don’t think domain registration is definitive enough an indicator. - StickyNote puts your to-do list front and cente... A system for organizing and prioritizing a to-do list is only effective if executed as planned. I’m sure everyone has implemented a system at some point or other that just hasn’t worked. For me, it was always because the list was out of sight, out of mind. In other words, if I didn’t have the list in front of me at all times I’d let the asks lapse, and the system would be broken. A while back I came across a BlackBerry app that takes care of this issue. It’s called StickyNote, and, well, it does just what you might imagine. You’ll never forget the important items on your to-do list again. As you can see, the application puts your to-do list front and center. You can edit where the note sits and how large it is, as well as the font face and size. You can also change the display of the note itself. This can be a simple text box, a sticky note, or a notepad. The only downside I see is that it wiped out my wallpaper. In the options you can choose a new background, so it’s not a big deal. This also gives you a chance to pick a wallpaper that matches up well with the note. Also, in a minor gripe, if you have a Today preview it might not sit well over the text. This isn’t a big deal because you can always scroll away from a Today preview icon, leaving the background clean. You can get StickyNote for $2.99. It works with OS versions 4.7 and 5.0. - Walkthrough and review of Calendar Pro for Blac... For all the functions that your BlackBerry brings you natively, sometimes it just doesn’t perform those tasks with vigor. For instance, many of the native apps are stripped down. For some, like Messages, that’s a thing of beauty. For others, though, users might seek an upgrade. For me, the Calendar is one native app I’d like to enhance. Yes, it works fine as is, and even integrates with my Google Calendar. But sometimes the extras make the app more usable. That’s what I found with Calendar Pro. It’s a powerful calendar app that helps you organize yourself in a way not completely possible with the stock calendar app. How it works While Calendar Pro is an app in itself, it essentially lays over your current Calendar and Tasks app. So, if for some reason you don’t have the Tasks app installed, you won’t be able to use the tasks aspect of Calendar Pro. This shouldn’t be a problem for most users, but it’s just a warning to those who have uninstalled some native applications. Otherwise, the application is a performance enhancer for your current apps. It allows you to further manipulate calendar events, and brings more functionality and accessibility to tasks. Ideally, this leads to a greater level of organization, helping you keep your life in tidier order. Starting up When you boot up Calendar Pro you’ll go straight to the quadrant screen. From here you can select daily, weekly, or monthly view, plus tasks. You can also return to this screen at any time by pressing the menu button and selecting View. It’s a nice, easy way to start up the application, since it takes you to the essentials. Daily view provides you with an outlook of your current day. Here you can see each of your appointments for the day, plus your tasks. I’ll get more into tasks later on, but this is essentially a list of to-do items. It integrates with all calendar views, but is front and center in daily view. Weekly view displays a grid of the current week. If you have set color codes for your events (again, we’ll hit on this in a minute) you’ll see those colors noted on the grid. Even if you haven’t set a color, appointment times are noted in the grid. You can scroll through and click to see them, but you won’t see any text on the weekly view screen. Monthly view is your basic calendar layout, starting with the first and ending with the last day of the month. Again, you can see your appointments noted here, but with no text. You can, however, scroll over the day to see a list of appointments, which appear on the bottom of the screen. Tasks brings you to the master list of your tasks. These will be set in order you created them unless you set a priority. In that case you’ll see low priority items towards the bottom and high priority items atop the list. The basics Adding appointments to Calendar Pro is just as easy as adding an appointment to your normal BlackBerry calendar. In fact, you can add an event to your normal BlackBerry calendar and it will show up in Calendar Pro, and vice versa. This means that if you’re using Google Sync that your Google Calendar items will also show up. When you create your appointment you’ll see five tabs atop the screen. In addition to the normal details, you can also add notes the item, you can put it in a category, you can set a recurrence frequency, and you can add attendees. In the main details screen you can also set your status during the event to busy, tentative, free, or out of office. Even better, you can color code these. To change the colors for your status, go to Settings and then Colors. You’ll see all of those statuses listed. To edit a color scroll over the status, click the menu button, and select Change color. From there you can select from among 50 colors. Tasks Since the integration of tasks is the most noticeable change from the native BlackBerry system I’ll take a few minutes to show how the function works with Calendar Pro. The idea of tasks is, of course, self-explanatory, so we’ll jump right into how they work. You can create a new task from any screen, by pressing menu and then selecting New Task. You’ll then see a screen with four tabs: details, notes, categories, recurrence. The first field in the details screen is for the task title. You can then set the task’s status as not started, completed, in progress, waiting, or deferred. Priority can be set to normal, high, or low, and then you can assign a due date to it. Just select By Date from the final drop-down box and you’ll get a few more fields that let you set the date and any notifications you’d like to go along with it. The next tab, notes, allows you to add any relevant information to the task. For instance, when I create a task for an article I have to write, I sometimes add hyperlinks to it. Or at least notes on where I can find more information. Really, it’s just a place to keep relevant ideas, so they’ll always be right along side the task itself. In the last tab you can set the task to recur daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, or not at all. By default there is no recurrence, and for most recurring tasks you can just create a calendar entry. There is the option, though, if you’d like it. We skipped the third tab, categories, for good reason. It, too, deserves its own section. Categories Another feature that makes Calendar Pro stand out is its use of categories. These allow you to more easily scan your tasks and appointments, since you can create custom colors and icons for different categories. By default Calendar Pro comes with two categories, business and personal. You can add more by going into Settings and selecting Category Manager. When you click menu in that screen you can select Add category, which allows you to enter a new category name. When you click OK you’ll see it added to the list, with an X and a blank white box to its right. These two boxes represent the icon and color for the category. If you want to change the color or the icon for a category, roll over it with the trackball/trackpad and click the menu button. You’ll see options to change the category’s color, change the category’s icon, or remove the category’s icon. You can choose from among 50 colors and 15 icons. These will then show up on your calendar, making it easier to categorize your items. You can also rename and delete categories from this menu. General settings Calendar Pro allows you to control much with the interface and display. This includes the default view (I chose Day), the day the week starts, and the time the day starts and ends. You can also manipulate the way colors are displayed on the calendar. This includes whether you show the category colors and how they display (rectangle or in the background), whether to display category icons, and whether to color your appointments by status or by category. An option to color by DB also exists. This covers your different BlackBerry email addresses, and can be changed in the DB Colors option under settings. Finally, you have the option to enable or disable reminders. You can enable or disable them universally, or you can do it for appointments or tasks only. The program also allows you to change the snooze time on each reminder, ranging from one to 30 minutes. Shortcuts Shortcuts can help you navigate a calendar faster, and Calendar Pro comes with a dozen of them. Better yet, it allows you to change the shortcut for each them. By default they go: View month – m View week – w View day – d View tasks – l New appointment – a New task – t Show previous date – b Show today – c Show next date – f Show Go To date – g Month preview scroll up – p Month preview scroll down – n Again, you can change any of these to any of the 26 letters. Getting Calendar Pro and giveaway If you’d like to enhance the performance of your BlackBerry calendar, you can get Calendar Pro for $14.95. It also comes with a free trial, which is always good for applications like this. We’re going to make this a little interesting. Because I enjoyed this app so much we decided to do a giveaway on this. Just leave a comment on this post and we’ll select 15 winners at random for a free Calendar Pro license. The contest will run for a week, so we’ll select winners next Wednesday, August 4. This post originated at BBGeeks.com - home to all things Blackberry! - Virtual Vault stores all of your BIS emails Your BlackBerry can store plenty of emails. In fact, if you so choose, you can have it store your BIS emails forever. Combined with a search function, this can become a valuable tool. It can also, after time, take up way too much device memory. That leaves plenty of room for an application that dumps your BIS emails onto a memory card. The folks at Virtual Fidelity have filled that need with their BlackBerry application, Virtual Vault. It helps save room on your device by dumping BIS emails onto an SD card, complete with search, edit, forward, and reply options. It sounds like an excellent email archival tool. Virtual Vault saves all of your BIS emails, both sent and received, for easy access later. Within Virtual Vault you can search for emails and then edit them, forward them, or even reply to them. You can save many different vault files, so you can keep things organized. These are encrypted files, so you don;t need to worry about security. BIS users can get Virtual Vault for $9.99. BES users should have a version in the next week or so. This post originated at BBGeeks.com - home to all things Blackberry!
