Baker Gigs or Jobs: Is Experience Required? by Adnan Masood
Have you always dreamed of working in a bakery, but do you have no or little baking experience? If so, you might wonder if it pointless to apply for baker gigs. So is it? Not necessarily.
As you can imagine, bakeries do like to hire employees with experience in the baking industry. So lets say that a local bakery is hiring. You are more likely to get the job if you have taken a cooking or Cake Decorating class, if you have worked in a bakery or a café before and so forth. With that said, it is important to remember that there are a wide range of jobs available at any establishment, including a cookie or cake shop.
The backbone of a bakery is the treats (cakes, Cupcakes, pies, muffins, and so forth prepared), with that said, a lot of other tasks are performed behind the scenes. Inventory control and ordering is vital to ensure there are enough ingredients, cashiers are needed to process sales, managers are needed to supervise staff members, business managers and or accountants are needed to track sales for tax and business profit purposes. And so forth! Basically, there are a lot of tasks needed to be performed at a restaurant that caters to prepared snacks
Aside from the fact that there are a wide range of positions available at bakeries, it is also important to take into account that most shop owners do provide their employees with training. Moreover, established shops have set recipes that they follow when preparing their delicious goods. You will not automatically be required to know how to make a marble cake by hand and from scratch right from the get-go.
As established above, a bakery is more likely to hire an individual for a baker gig who does have some cooking experience. If you have this, it is important to include it on your resume or job application. Even if you have no formal experience, but have a passion for baking; be sure to include that even if it is in the hobbies section.
Also know that you can find a wide range of classes that are open to the public. Some of these classes are free and others cost an affordable one-time fee. The popular craft store AC Moore is known for their cake decorating classes. If you are looking for experience in a pinch, these classes are something to consider. They can be noted on your resume or job application.
Finally, when it comes to finding baker gigs or jobs, you have a number of different approaches. It is easy to head online to a job search website. Your search phrase should be related to baking. Ideal search phrases include bake, bakery, cook, cake decorator, and so forth. If you find limited job openings, pop open your local phone book and find the addresses of local businesses in the area. You can stop in to inquire about employment or to drop off your resume.
